Radio astronomy at school

In an effort to bring radio astronomy to the classroom, the ALMA observatory organizes astronomy talks in interested schools, both in person if in Chile, and via streaming for schools or other groups in other countries.

In addition, it has developed a Radio Astronomy Manual especially designed for teachers, and it organizes workshops for teachers given by ALMA astronomers to address these issues and explain how to use the Manual in their classrooms.

The ALMA at school manual is an instrument especially developed to help teachers find common ground between school curricula and radio astronomy, opening up a new window of knowledge for elementary and high school students.

If you would like to use the manual, you can download the e-version here, along with a PowerPoint presentation to help you prepare for your class.

If you would like to participate in the next talk given to professors, we invite you to sign up for our mailing list to learn about our activities:

Box: If you use this manual, be sure to send us your comments to [email protected]. We hope to receive as much feedback as possible from those who use it, so we can continue to adapt it for use with schoolchildren.

Request for talks with astronomers and/or engineers

The observatory has limited capacity for its astronomy and engineering staff to give talks in schools and other institutes. We can also give talks via direct streaming with the observatory. These must be organized as far in advance as possible, and their feasibility will depend on each specific event.
