ALMA and ESO to open again its doors for Astronomy Day in Chile

As part of Astronomy Day events, the ALMA Observatory and the European Southern Observatory (ESO) will open its Santiago offices to the public next Friday, March 18, with activities for students and the general public.

In conjunction with the Municipality of Vitacura, students from public schools in the district have been invited to observe the Sun through telescopes, watch videos projected in a mobile planetarium, and attend a lecture on astronomy.

In the afternoon there will be activities for the community, with free functions at the mobile planetarium and a talk at 19:00 hrs. with video connection with the ALMA observatory located in northern Chile.

The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), an international partnership of the European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere (ESO), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Natural Sciences (NINS) of Japan in cooperation with the Republic of Chile, is the largest astronomical project in existence. ALMA is a single telescope of revolutionary design, composed initially of 66 high precision antennas located on the Chajnantor Plateau, 5000 meters altitude in northern Chile.
