Panoramic view of ALMA site on the Chajnantor plain of the Chilean Andes, 5000 m above sea level. ALMA comprises 66 high-precision antennas, spread over distances of up to 16 kilometers. The site has been chosen for its exceptional dry atmospheric conditions, as the water vapour in the Earth's atmosphere absorbs the millimeter and submillimeter radiation that ALMA aims to observe.
