Zooming in on Turbulence in Stephen’s Quintet

9 January, 2023 / Read time: 1 minute

This short video shows images of Stephan's Quintet, a cluster of 5 galaxies located in the constellation Pegasus, about 270 million light-years away.

The animation begins with the sharp image captured with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), which zooms in on the regions between the elliptical galaxy NGC 7319 and the colliding galaxies NGC 7318A and 7318B. In that sector, a scientific team observed 3 key regions in extreme detail with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Band 6 to understand the behavior of hydrogen gas clouds.
