The largest astronomical observatory in the world, ALMA or Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, celebrated its first decade of existence on March 13, 2023.
The first celebration activity was carried out with the local communities, given that its 66 antennas with which it scans the cold and dark Universe are located on the Chajnantor Plateau, an ancestral Atacama territory. A Yatiri led a ceremony at Pachamama to bless the scientific activities carried out there, at 5,000 meters of altitude in the heights of the Atacama Desert, one hour from the town of San Pedro de Atacama.
Then, the ALMA “birthday” guests proceeded to the facilities located at 2,900 meters above sea level where another ceremony was held, this time with representatives of ALMA partners in North America, Europe and East Asia.
