The Back End systems in each ALMA antenna send the signals generated by the Front End units installed in each antenna to the Correlator installed in the AOS (Array Operations Site) Technical Building. The analog data, produced by Front End electronics, are processed and digitized before being entered into the data coder, followed by optic fiber transmitter units and multiplexers. These elements are all installed in each antenna's receiver booth. The optic signals are then transmitted along fibers to the AOS Technical Building. In the Technical Building, the incoming optic signals are demultiplexed and de-formatted before entering the Correlator. In this photo: ALMA operator José Luis Ortiz carrying out Back End tasks.
