The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is proud to announce that our Deputy Director of Operations, Dr. Norikazu Mizuno, has been awarded the distinguished Foreign Minister’s Commendation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. This prestigious award recognizes Dr. Mizuno’s outstanding efforts in fostering international cooperation and understanding, particularly between Japan and Chile, in the field of astronomy.

The award ceremony, held at the Residence of the Japanese Ambassador in Santiago, Chile, on October 25, 2024, was a fitting tribute to Dr. Mizuno's pivotal role in advancing ALMA’s mission and his unwavering commitment to scientific collaboration and cross-cultural partnership. His efforts have been instrumental in enhancing ALMA’s operations and strengthening the robust relationship between Japan and Chile, particularly within the international scientific community.

Dr. Mizuno, who arrived in Chile 28 years ago as a postgraduate student and whose success history is deeply linked to the success of ALMA, thanked all the people responsible for ALMA's achievements, the Chilean astronomical community, the Japanese companies, and especially the people working in the ALMA collaboration, doing the hard work in East Asia, Europe, North America, and Chile.

ALMA extends its heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Mizuno for this well-deserved recognition and celebrates his exceptional role in bringing nations together through science and discovery.
