ALMA Winter Break

Winter break is drawing near in the southern hemisphere and ALMA has a series of entertaining activities related to radio astronomy: exhibits at the Santiago Library, Gabriela Mistral Library in La Serena and a recently inaugurated ongoing exhibit at the Santiago Planetarium, which will be accompanied by talks and workshops for children and youth.

ExpoALMA will be open until July 29 in the Santiago Library (Tuesday to Friday from 11:00 am to 8:30 pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm), together with images from the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO). It includes more than 10 photographs and graphics depicting discoveries by ALMA, the most important radio telescope in the world. Alongside this exhibit, there will be talks on astronomy on July 19 and 26 given by astronomers José Gallardo from ALMA and Gaspare Lo Curto from ESO.

Simultaneously in northern Chile, the Gabriela Mistral Library in la Serena (Tuesday to Friday, from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm) is also presenting ExpoALMA with discoveries, a giant 6x2 comic and an explanatory exhibit of ALMA kids. It is also carrying out complementary activities such as talks and workshops. On Thursday, July 12, at 5:30 pm, ALMA astronomer Miguel Sánchez, will give a master talk entitled “ALMA: in search of our cosmic origins.” Other activities related to the exhibit will soon be announced by the library.

Finally, a permanent ALMA exhibit has just been inaugurated at the Santiago Planetarium. Graphics and videos installed in the already traditional space in the capital, managed by the Universidad de Santiago de Chile (USACH), will entertain children and adults alike.
