In the late '80s and early' 90s, the main “site tests” (climatological, geological, etc.) were carried out to find the right site to carry out the ALMA project. Among the main factors, the place was a key point. It should be very dry, be at a high altitude and be as flat as possible to achieve the different configurations that the antenna array needs to be able to observe. This photo corresponds to that most important newspaper in the history of ALMA. Without the scientists who worked hard in the desert, ALMA could not have materialized. © ALMA (ESO / NAOJ / NRAO)
